The UMP is a submachine gun in Population: One. It keeps full damage out to 20 m, further than any other SMG, and does 19 damage a bullet.
What the stars change on the UMP
A better UMP doesn't hit harder. Every star does 19 damage a bullet, 23 on a headshot.
What a star buys is the magazine: 28 rounds at one star, 44 at five.
Every star also takes a little recoil off, so a five-star UMP stays on target longer.
A star changes nothing else: not the reload, not the range or the falloff, not the aim down the sights.
How the UMP fires
Hold the trigger and it fires 14 rounds a second until the magazine is empty: 2 s of fire at one star, 3.1 s at five.
Reloading is done by hand: the magazine to the well, then the rack. Nothing in the game times a reload.
Against a built wall every hit counts 1.5 times its damage.
Playing the UMP
It does less damage a bullet than the MP5 and the Silenced MP9, and holds 28 rounds at one star and 44 at five.
Shots to down with the UMP
A player has 100 health and up to 100 shield. On health alone the UMP downs in 6 body shots or 5 headshots. Through a full shield it takes 11 body shots in about 0.7 s or 9 headshots in about 0.6 s, if everything lands.
Where the UMP stops hitting hard
Full damage out to 20 m. Past that a bullet does 13 damage and falls to 9 over the next 24 m, then stays at 9 out to the UMP's 160 m range.
A bullet travels at 700 m/s, so a target moving sideways at distance has to be led.
UMP or MP5, Silenced MP9, P90 and Uzis
The MP5 does 22 damage a bullet, 13 bullets a second. The Silenced MP9 does 21 damage a bullet, 12 bullets a second. The P90 does 20 damage a bullet, 15 bullets a second. The Uzis do 14 damage a bullet, 13 bullets a second.
