Drops without stars in normal play. Stars only come from Phoenix pods (always 4★) and custom maps.
The SMAW is a rocket launcher in Population: One. A rocket does 60 damage where it lands, with a blast around it, and the tube holds three rockets.
What the stars change on the SMAW
The SMAW has no stars of its own: it does 60 damage wherever it lies on the map. A loot table can give it stars; a Phoenix pod's SMAW is always four, and at four a hit does 135 damage. At five it would do 160 damage.
How the SMAW fires
One rocket per pull of the trigger. A pull within 909 ms of the last rocket does nothing, so the SMAW fires at most 1.1 rockets a second; under that, the player's trigger finger sets the pace.
Reloading is done by hand: a rocket into the tube. Nothing in the game times a reload.
It slows the player down: 20% slower on their feet while holding it.
Against a built wall every hit counts 5 times its damage.
The blast reaches 6 m from where the rocket lands. At the edge it does 67% of the hit, and through a wall 50%.
Playing the SMAW
Rockets travel slowly enough to be seen in flight. Against a built wall each hit counts five times. The SMAW slows down the player carrying it.
Shots to down with the SMAW
A player has 100 health and up to 100 shield. On health alone the SMAW downs in 2 rockets. Through a full shield it takes 4 rockets, if everything lands.
At five stars: 1 rocket on health alone, 2 rockets through a full shield.
From 3 stars up, one rocket anywhere downs a player with no shield.
Where the SMAW stops hitting hard
The SMAW does the same 60 damage the whole way out to its 300 m range.
A rocket travels at 60 m/s, so a target moving sideways at distance has to be led.
