The M60 is a machine gun in Population: One, grouped with the assault rifles. Its magazine holds 75 rounds at one star and 135 at five, the most of any gun.
What the stars change on the M60
A better M60 doesn't hit harder. Every star does 27 damage a bullet, 33 on a headshot.
What a star buys is the magazine: 75 rounds at one star, 135 at five.
Every star also takes a little recoil off, so a five-star M60 stays on target longer.
The M60 starts slow and winds up (below); a star shortens the wind-up, from 10 shots at one star to 4 at five.
A star changes nothing else: not the reload, not the range or the falloff, not the aim down the sights.
How the M60 fires
Hold the trigger and it fires 7.5 rounds a second until the magazine is empty: 10 s of fire at one star, 18 s at five.
It starts at 50% of that rate and winds up to the full 7.5 rounds a second over the first 10 shots at one star, 4 at five. Let go of the trigger, for however short, and the wind-up starts over.
Reloading is done by hand: the magazine to the well, then the rack. Nothing in the game times a reload.
It slows the player down: 20% slower on their feet while holding it.
Against a built wall every hit counts 3 times its damage.
Playing the M60
It does 27 damage a bullet and three times that against a built wall. It starts firing slowly and speeds up while the trigger is held, and it slows down the player carrying it.
Shots to down with the M60
A player has 100 health and up to 100 shield. On health alone the M60 downs in 4 body shots or 4 headshots. Through a full shield it takes 8 body shots in about 0.9 s or 7 headshots in about 0.8 s, if everything lands.
Where the M60 stops hitting hard
Full damage out to 40 m. Past that a bullet does 20 damage and falls to 16 over the next 60 m, then stays at 16 out to the M60's 280 m range.
A bullet travels at 950 m/s, so a target moving sideways at distance has to be led.
M60 or FAL, MK18, AKM, CX4 and RFB
The FAL does 33 damage a bullet, up to 5.5 bullets a second. The MK18 does 25 damage a bullet, up to 10.5 bullets a second. The AKM does 20 damage a bullet, 11 bullets a second. The CX4 does 19 damage a bullet, 6.5 bullets a second. The RFB does 19 damage a bullet, 9.5 bullets a second.
