The FAL is a semi-automatic assault rifle in Population: One. It does 33 damage a bullet, the most of the assault rifles, and 44 on a headshot.
What the stars change on the FAL
A better FAL doesn't hit harder. Every star does 33 damage a bullet, 44 on a headshot.
What a star buys is the magazine: 15 rounds at one star, 27 at five.
Every star also takes a little recoil off, so a five-star FAL stays on target longer.
A star changes nothing else: not the reload, not the range or the falloff, not the aim down the sights.
How the FAL fires
One shot per pull of the trigger. A pull within 182 ms of the last shot does nothing, so the FAL fires at most 5.5 shots a second; under that, the player's trigger finger sets the pace.
Reloading is done by hand: the magazine to the well, then the rack. Nothing in the game times a reload.
Playing the FAL
Full damage reaches 80 m, further than any other assault rifle. The magazine holds 15 rounds at one star and 27 at five.
Shots to down with the FAL
A player has 100 health and up to 100 shield. On health alone the FAL downs in 4 body shots or 3 headshots. Through a full shield it takes 7 body shots or 5 headshots, if everything lands.
Where the FAL stops hitting hard
Full damage out to 80 m. Past that a bullet does 29 damage and falls to 26 over the next 50 m, then stays at 26 out to the FAL's 350 m range.
A bullet travels at 920 m/s, so a target moving sideways at distance has to be led.
FAL or M60, MK18, AKM, CX4 and RFB
The M60 does 27 damage a bullet, 7.5 bullets a second. The MK18 does 25 damage a bullet, up to 10.5 bullets a second. The AKM does 20 damage a bullet, 11 bullets a second. The CX4 does 19 damage a bullet, 6.5 bullets a second. The RFB does 19 damage a bullet, 9.5 bullets a second.
