The AKM is a fully automatic assault rifle in Population: One. It does 20 damage a bullet and keeps full damage out to 35 m.
What the stars change on the AKM
A better AKM doesn't hit harder. Every star does 20 damage a bullet, 30 on a headshot.
What a star buys is the magazine: 20 rounds at one star, 36 at five.
Every star also takes a little recoil off, so a five-star AKM stays on target longer.
A star changes nothing else: not the reload, not the range or the falloff, not the aim down the sights.
How the AKM fires
Hold the trigger and it fires 11 rounds a second until the magazine is empty: 1.8 s of fire at one star, 3.3 s at five.
Reloading is done by hand: the magazine to the well, then the rack. Nothing in the game times a reload.
Against a built wall every hit counts 1.1 times its damage.
Playing the AKM
Its stars add rounds, not damage: 20 at one star and 36 at five. Past 35 m its damage falls off over a shorter distance than any other assault rifle's.
Shots to down with the AKM
A player has 100 health and up to 100 shield. On health alone the AKM downs in 5 body shots or 4 headshots. Through a full shield it takes 10 body shots in about 0.8 s or 7 headshots in about 0.5 s, if everything lands.
Where the AKM stops hitting hard
Full damage out to 35 m. Past that a bullet does 16 damage and falls to 12 over the next 15 m, then stays at 12 out to the AKM's 280 m range.
A bullet travels at 900 m/s, so a target moving sideways at distance has to be led.
AKM or FAL, M60, MK18, CX4 and RFB
The FAL does 33 damage a bullet, up to 5.5 bullets a second. The M60 does 27 damage a bullet, 7.5 bullets a second. The MK18 does 25 damage a bullet, up to 10.5 bullets a second. The CX4 does 19 damage a bullet, 6.5 bullets a second. The RFB does 19 damage a bullet, 9.5 bullets a second.
